What A Girl Wants (2006) - Plot & Excerpts

Ashley Stockingdale...how do I describe her? She's a 31 year-old patent attorney in Silicon Valley. She's a bit of a work-a-holic, and the little social life she has consists of outings with her church singles group, which she sardonically calls the "Reasons". (As in, everyone in the group is single for a "Reason".) Ashley can tell you the 'reason' each person in the group is single, but she doesn't think her own 'reason' for being single is as blatantly obvious as the others in the group....in fact, she doesn't even know the reason herself!Ashley is a Christian, but I felt a bit uncomfortable with her attitude at times. Several times through-out the book when something happened that she didn't like, she would mentally (albeit briefly) get upset with God, and I just wasn't comfortable with that. At times it also seemed like she thinks she's a bit better than everyone else, especially where the "Reasons" are concerned.Maybe I'm not in the targeted age range for this book, being that Ashley is 31 and I'm 22, or maybe it's because my lifestyle is just so far from Ashley's, but I had trouble being able to relate to her. She is a fairly big drama queen, and her thinking basically always revolves around the fact that she's single, or around a new (but soon to be forgotten) resolution that she doesn't need a man to complete her....and back and forth it goes. In reading this book, a couple times it actually made me feel a little uncomfortable with the fact that I myself am single, just because of how Ashley mentally sort of puts down the singles in the "Reasons" (church singles) group. Now in spite of all this, I did find myself rooting for Ashley, for her to get the guy and for things to work out for her. There were some humorous moments, and I couldn't help but feel sorry for her getting sent to Taiwan for her job. She may whine and play the drama queen, and if she were real it's not likely that I'd be close friends with her....but when you come right down to it, she does make the right choices about the really important things in her life. I'm curious to find out what happens to her, so I will be reading the second and third books.

I may not look like the girl on the cover... but I feel like her at least. And even more so, as the complexity of the character is revealed (and slightly unraveled) in the pages. It's been a long time since I've read a book that struck so directly with a myriad of my thoughts, hopes, dreams, fears, beliefs... and still had the enticement of the story, the humor, fast wit, and sarcasm! For my first jaunt into Christian fiction... let alone Christian Chick-Lit, this certainly was worth the gamble... wow! I can hardly keep myself from jumping into the follow-up book, all the while I'm sort of stuck: basking, rereading in my mind, reliving each exciting moment... wondering when my time will come, and praying a glean every ounce from it the I'm supposed to.Now, I'm sending this treasure straight off to Miss Elizabeth, in hopes of sharing the wealth/love. Plus, if anyone, she could totally use it right now! But this will remain a part of my permanent collection for a while, at least until I'm sure everyone around me who would appreciate it gets a chance to read it, and I possibly have the opportunity to go through it one more time!So enjoy, read whole-heartedly, share... (may I suggest Miss Christa!? or SaraSue!?) and just make sure it gets back to me eventually!?Blessings

What do You think about What A Girl Wants (2006)?

Anyone can see from my books that I actually like to read Christian fiction as well as secular chick lit.So this one could be right up my alley? But, eh, no. I just couldn't relate to it at all. I think a big part of that would be that I kind of did skip that prolonged single state since I got married as young as I did. And the church set up was pretty foreign to me, too, what with all the different groups. And I'm not a career woman. And I'm not into shopping. And...the list goes on. Just not a book I could relate to at all. Oh, and the scenes with her friend's miscarriage made me want to throw the book across the room...Just, so full of cliches and it just seemed incredibly unrealistic to me.

I am struggling between giving this book 2 stars vs 3 stars. Here we go again with another book that had all the makings of a book I should love. The protagonist is "just like me" - she's 31, in a job she worked hard to get but isn't sure she wants, isn't married, has no prospects on the horizon and has friends who are all getting married and having babies. But then the story takes a deep left turn and now we see WHY she's single. Shallow as all get out, selfish like no one else, and rude beyond belief but then believes it's ok to be that way because God is on her side (and here I must point out that we have lost the just like me vibe!) And that is where the story starts to go haywire for me. The secondary characters all seem wooden and not very well thought out. If I read one more label I was going to scream ("I threw my Prada in the car...I asked the cop where my Prada was...I held up my Burberry scarf...my Jessica Mclintock dress is off the rack - but it's ok because I'm in Vegas...look at my Jimmy Choo shoes. WE GET IT!) This is now the second Christian chick lit book I have tried and both times (2 different authors) I walked away with the vibe of "I'm better than you because I pray to God so now I'm going to sit here and tear you down because you don't wear designer labels or have a great job like me. And AMEN God has my back so I can do what I want!" And come to think about it? The author insulted administrative assistants and then tried to backtrack by saying to be nice to them because they have more power than you think..after typing this out I'm downgrading this review to one star.

Began originally June 28, 2008; abandoned July 3, 2008.I began this book in 2008, and abandoned it. My head was not in the book at the time, and it was just too much of a slog. In fact, I purposely left the book in my hotel room, because I was not enjoying it.In 2014, after enjoying other books by the same author, I decided to give What a Girl Wants another try. I am so glad I did. The book was very good and am I happy I read it. I agree with some other reviews that Ashley is a bit shallow, and far too judgmental, but I think she is a real character, she is a real person, and one that I would not mind having dinner with (with or without a coupon). I am looking forward to the rest of the series.A couple of notes completely unrelated to the story of the book. I started out reading a mass-market paperback edition of the book, but finally finished the Kindle edition. The author/publisher should really have someone thoroughly proofread the Kindle edition text. There were MANY glaring grammatical errors in the books, and many more typos that slipped past. Usually I can overlook them, but there were so many it was really getting to be a game for me to find them all. That is not a criticism of the book or the author, but more of the publisher. I hope there is soon an update of the book for all those who have not read it yet.
