What Happened To Cass McBride? (2007) - Plot & Excerpts

The book What Happened to Cass McBride by Gail Giles is a suspenseful, exciting and captivating book, when Cass writes a note to a friend about someone and everything goes downhill. Not knowing the person Cass wrote it about would not only read it but would kill himself. Kyle the unhappy brother of David finding out about the note and David, kidnaps Cass and puts her underneath the ground for several days. Kyle made it so she wouldn’t die, but would make her uncomfortable. Having only a straw and a walkie talkie and Kyle, Cass McBride has to survive underground. Leaving only her words to help her out. While Cass is trying to get out of the box, Ben who is the detective is trying to find her. Ben only having other people’s words. You should most definitely read What Happened To Cass McBride by Gail Giles!tIn the book what happened to Cass McBride, the author uses flashbacks. Flashbacks are memories you have of the past. Giles uses these flashbacks in her advantage by giving the reader information. The book is set up by 3 point of views, Cass’s Kyle’s and Ben’s. With these point of views the perspectives are being told at different times, and it’s helpful to get a background of what happened. One of the times the author used flashbacks to help the reader is when Kyle thought of a time when David called him and told him about the horrible things there mom has done to them. “I paced in the room, listening to David’s ragging breathing in my ear. Pulled the cellphone away so I could think. It was barley October and this year was already worse than last. Mom was worse to David when I was away at school than when I was home” (122-123). This quote shows that the book a good placement of flashback, if the flashback wasn’t here than all David’s complaining on the phone would be confusing and you’d wonder why David’s mom is arguing with him. Another good use of a flashback is when cass is persuading Kyle to get her out of the box he put her in. Cass has to use her talkative skills to get her out of the box, “after homecoming you don’t have to be stuck with me” (88). This quote shows that Cass isn’t the kind of person that dates someone, shell date them or whatever then they will eventually just drift apart, not leaving any hard feelings, but in that quote it showed that Derek, the quarterback of the football team will get the band votes, the majority of the votes making him homecoming king. If Cass is his date, then she’s homecoming queen. This example of a flashback is helpful because if you didn’t have that then Cass wouldn’t have a reason to get out of the box and explain to him that it wasn’t her fault that David had killed himself. Using that flashback it helped the reader, showing that flashbacks are important in this book. tAnother reason I believe that you should read the book is because the different points of views. You have Cass’s, bens, and Kyles. They all take place at different times. Cass’s is when she’s in the box. Bens is when he is interviewing Kyle and Kyle is when he is telling the story to the cops. These are helping you get what is really going on. Hearing both sides of the stories. I really liked this because knowing what actually happened and knowing what they lied about was cool. There are even some really big twists. Like how Kyle and Cass used to like each other at different times and now Kyles burying Cass. These are some of the ways the book really drew me in. it’s a really good book that you just don’t want to put down! tI think you should read the book What Happened to Cass McBride by Gail Giles. The way the author uses the flashbacks and the point of views really pulls in the reader and makes them not want to put the book down. If you like a suspenful, exciting and captivating book, and don’t mind a few swear words here and there, I definitely suggest this book!

What Happened to Cass McBride by Gail Giles is about a 16 year old girl named Cass who is trying to escape from the truth. David Kirby asked Cass McBride out. Cass wrote a mean nasty note to her friend about David asking her out but David picked it up and committed suicide. In a relation to that, Kyle Kirby kidnaped Cass and buried her alive. While all of that is happening, Ben the big scary cop is trying to figure out if David Kirby’s case is related to Cass McBride’s case. Next years 8th graders should read What Happened to Cass McBride because it’s exciting, suspenseful and deals with real life problems and family problems. Next year’s 8th graders should read this book because it is exciting and suspenseful. One way it is exciting and suspenseful is when Kyle is in the interview room “’She’s dead, isn’t she? If she was alive, I wouldn’t be handcuffed to a table in an interview room’” (1). This shows the book is exciting and suspenseful because it pushes the reader tov the edge of their seat, wanting to read more. Another way this book is exciting and suspenseful is when Cass is in the box and Kyle is taking to her but she doesn’t know it at first,” ‘Is that all you got?’ The voice came from my right hand. I shrieked. Where was he?”(23). This shows the book is exciting and suspenseful because you dart to the edge of your seat just waiting to find out who it is. Another reason why 8th graders should read this book is because it deals with real life problems and real family problems. One way it deals with real life problems and real family problems is when Cass is about to go to bed “He always had Xanax in there. Score. I took one. Then went back for another. This was a two-Xan stress… The pills might be kicking in. An empty stomach was a welcoming friend to drugs. Thank the Lord Dad was a hypocrite… Drugs definitely kicking in” (4-5). This shows real family problems because she takes drugs for something so little that it should not be necessary, and the Dad has the drug on hand which is a big problem. Another way this book deals with real life problems and family problems is when Cass is out of the box and out of the hospital “I’m back in a dark, narrow space with a square button under my thumb. Talking. Finding the words for my story. I do this every night” (207). This shows real life problems because she is doing things that are not mentally healthy for you. Some people don’t think that next year’s 8th graders should not read this book. Some people would think that because of language. Language takes a chunk of the book but with that compared to the excitement it won’t matter. Yes, they do throw the F bomb and the B word but it’s very rarely. Next year’s 8th graders should read What happened to Cass McBride because it has excitement, suspense, deals with real life problems and real family problems.

What do You think about What Happened To Cass McBride? (2007)?

“What Happened to Cass McBride?” by Gail Giles is a mysterious, suspenseful, deep, and intelligent must-read! One quote that put me on edge was, “‘We’re running out of time.’” (121) Just reading this makes me wonder, ‘What’s happening? What will happen to Cass? Is she going to make it? Will they find her in time?’ This on its own, makes me want to read, read, read! If you can get into a book and allow suspense then this is a perfect book for you. “‘Never make it a question. Answer with authority. If you speak with authority, people listen. Walk with confidence. Keep your eyes straight ahead but watch the people around you, using your peripheral vision. Don’t get caught off-guard.’” (73) I think this quote is something I could take away from this book and use throughout my life. It’s advice that could be applied every second, of every day for your whole life. It showed intelligence in the author’s writing, but also a life lesson for anyone who reads it thoroughly enough to learn from it and use it forever. An example of great, deep writing is, “Your heart doesn’t break; it dissolves, leaks away, and it hurts.” (89) Personally, I think this is some great writing. It portrayed words that really caught my attention and were touching to me. Throughout the whole book, there are many words, phrases, paragraphs, etc. that someone could simply take away from and learn from. I would recommend this book to everyone and anyone. It is a great book that doesn’t allow you to put it down and always keeps you wondering and guessing. It’s intelligent and touching and an amazing book all around.

In the book about Cass McBride BY Gail Giles. Cass was buried alive and couldn’t speak the truth. Cass she aint suspect her life to be like that especially buried alive. Kyle is crazy because of his mom and because his brother hang his self. Officer ben he was trying his best to find cass and get the person that buried cass. One thing I like about what happened to Cass McBride is when kyle went crazy and broke into cass house and drug her and kidnapped her.’’I clamped my eyes down hard and grit my teeth. He knows my name, he didn’t grab a stranger he grabbed me . some one I know put me in this box,in the dark, he wants me to scream.pg25’’ this shows that kyle is a crazy dude and he don’t care about anything he do.One of these reason I recommend this book is because kyle getting in cass mcbride head.‘’I don’t know I don’t I was screaming. ‘’stop doing that. What are you doing?’’ the vibration and the noise, I couldn’t…. this show that kyle doesent have any control of what he doing to kyle at this point because he just want to hurt cass right now . ‘’she didn’t want much to do with him . except when she was ranting at him. He was like a little puppy’’.[pg106] this shows that kyle mom don’t like david bc he wasn’t like kyle and she used to treat david horrible when kyle was gone. Some people dont like this book because they probly don’t like suspense books and they probly don’t like books that keep switching up chapters every two pages.the book cass mcbride do these things but it’s a good book to read because its exciting book to read. That’s why some people don’t like this book because they probly don’t like suspense books. In the book about cass mc bride by gail giles cass was buried alive couldn’t speak the truth. Then she couldn’t speak the truth because kyle put her in a casit but cass is a strong young women in this book. Because cass went through a lot and didn’t really have her dad on her side but cass still had her mom that’s why in the book cass mcbride by gail giles cass was buried alive and couldn’t speak the truth.

The book, What Happened to Cass McBride by Gail Giles, was a good book because it was told into three different perspectives. The events that all happened in the book lead to one major event that would be David’s death, the character, Kyle’s brother. This book is also a mystery. I would suggest this book to the next year eighth graders. One reason why I suggest this book for next year eighth graders is because in the book there is three different viewpoints in one book. The story keeps going on but just from other people’s perspectives to tell more about the story. For example, all the characters in the book are telling the same story just in different ways. In the book, it goes from Cass telling that she doesn’t know where she is and what happened before she got where she is, then to Kyle telling how and why she got there, then final to the cop figuring out who kidnapped her an where she is. Another reason why I suggest this book to the next year eighth graders is because one of the characters, which would be the mom of Kyle and David, is the cause of what really happened in the book because all along in the book everyone thought it was Cass who was the cause of David’s death but it was really the mom. So now Cass is somewhere buried when she wasn’t the main cause of anything but, she also not to mention was a part of it. In the book, it says, “”so you can bleed? I wasn’t sure you were human. You know what I just figured out, mom? You murdered David”” (193). This quote shows that the mom didn’t physically kill David. She mentally killed him and she made him feel useless and then he had thoughts of suicide. All along you would think Cass did it but there’s more than one side of the story. So I had a connection to the book, like in an argument, on person is telling the story to somebody but then somebody that’s involved in the argument tell a whole different story. Also like in Cass McBride, Cass is saying how she didn’t kill David but she wrote the rude note. Which was not written to him, he found it. Then the mom is treating him poorly. It’s like a cover up, with Cass’s story going on about the note that you would think lead to David’s suicide, that’s covering up the story about how David’s mom wants him to be just like his brother, Kyle. Some people may not like this book because it may seem confusing how two people are blamed for the same cause. There’s three stories going on at the same time. The flashbacks may seem the most confusing because while the actual story is going on, there’s a story or a flashback relating to it. Some people may find it confusing but all it is, is basically showing there’s flashbacks so you get a bigger picture of what’s going on and a better understanding of it.I would recommend this book for a variety of reasons. One is because it’s an amazing book and second because there’s stories covering up another story which makes it interesting to read. I wrote this because it’s a good book and I would recommend people to read this book and get inspired by this book review and read the book.
