What To Expect Before You're Expecting (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
This was my first source for preconception research, after our pregnancy planning appt with my gyn and some things prompted me to go online and learn more. It was useful for someone who has tried for so long NOT to get pregnant that I relearned interesting things about the reproductive system I have left to birth control for so long. Did not read chapters 9-11 on fertility issues and miscarriage, will worry about that if we have trouble. It's a PG-rated book ("baby dancing"?) that gets some things wrong (BMI is the most important indicator of your physical fitness), some things right (quit smoking), and who the heck knows on the other stuff, because the references in this book are nonexistent. It doesn't even reliably say which bits of information are actually scientifically proven and which are untested/assumed/old wives' tales. The message I got from this book was: here's a giant, simplified overview of all the preconception advice you'll ever get- now that you have tons and tons of questions, go to your doctor (and hopefully you have a good doctor) for advice, because the only thing we'll reference is the associated website (which was written by the same people as this book, so).Definitely geared towards a woman in a monogamous heterosexual relationship who enjoys insipid euphemisms. Some people thought the writing was "down to earth"- it's cutesy. It takes (what I presume to be) some pretty technical information, simplifies the heck out of it, and then cutesifies it.
