Whisper No Lies (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

I usually write reviews on books that I have complaints about. For some reason that's easier for me. Not this time. IMO, this was the best of this series so far. I was way more invested in this book than the previous books. It didn't take too long to get into this story and I think that's because the internal dialogue was good and fast moving. Many times it's pages and pages of repetitive whining. I skim through those parts and usually miss something hidden in there. I sometimes wonder if those authors do that on purpose. It feels like I'm being blackmailed into reading a slow moving story. Not this time. So quickly, the dilemmas were presented and soon after a resolution. Then the next, and the next after that. It was suspenseful, funny, sexy and exciting.I found Johnny hilarious. His thought process seems to be more typical of a regular guy than the serious brooding type. At least most of the guys I know - maybe it's a Texas thang. He has a lot of walls in place for self preservation but he's a sensitive guy too. I just loved watching him become so befuddled by Crystal. Speaking of Crystal, I have to say that I get so tired of reading about the poor, sweet, innocent damsel in distress types that can't do anything for themselves. I picture the girl tied to the railroad tracks - crying and waiting for the hero in the white hat to free her just in time. No. Not Crystal. That girl is fierce and would manage a way to free herself - for sure. Not that she doesn't have her own weaknesses and insecurities like everyone else. But, she doesn't pine over her lost loves or cling or any of the other crap that is so very overdone in many of the military romance novels that I've been reading lately. I am going on with the series and am keeping my fingers crossed for more of the same. *spoiler alert*I can never go wrong when I pick up a Cindy Gerard piece, and WNL did not disappoint! The Heroine is Crystal, who manages security detail at a high rolling casino in Vegas. Johnny is a BOI operative who comes and goes. He is infatuated with Crystal but, typical, his job does not have room for anything more and a one-nighter. Crystal reminds him of Tinkerbell because of her pixie features and petite, yet voluptuous frame. But he is not the only one who notices her. Yao sees her and wants to claim her as his own. His problem: he does not take no for an answer. Bigger problem: he runs a sex slave business with a penchant for American girls. He sabotages her career, destroys her reputation, and kidnaps her. She wakes up to find herself in a shabby room in Yao's hometown in Indonesia where he has city officials under his paycheck. Johnny steps up to the plate and enlists his BOIs to save the woman who haunts his night and day dreams.Crystal has the wit to handle the BOIs, the skills to handle artillery, and the mental capability to deal with the drama that enfolds. I could not help myself, but I formed a major girl crush on her. She is savvy, quick on her feet, and very brave for not only handling her situation, but to actually play a role in her defense and lead herself into safety. The final showdown is between her and, not only Yao, but two of his goons! Needless to say, Crystal, as little as she is, singlehandedly takes them down. The final emotional blow was from Johnny when he realizes that her fight could have gone the opposite direction and he cries for her! I love this. He is genuinely tough but what makes him tough is his ability to remove the emotion quotient of the fight. But, of course, he is highly emotional when it comes to his Tink. This book is full of laughs, in fact, I have post its marking my favorite quotes and scenes.
