Why I Stayed: The Choices I Made In My Darkest Hour (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
A sometimes heart-wrenching book showing the road Gayle travelled after Ted's fall. It's an insightful look behind the scenes that I found riveting. A lot of times we see public figures like Ted Haggard as ivory tower people who were insidious liars and perverts that were ultimately exposed instead of real people with real problems that want real help. IT's not to excuse the decisions that were made but this book shows the human side that occurs behind the media circus that follows such a bad situation. This book is of special interest to me because I was attending New Life Church when this all went down. A lot of people in my life were deeply affected by it, and it's strange to read the book and feel like I'm reliving it. It's also interesting to hear from Gayle what was happening on the inside that most people weren't aware of. I had no idea what a shady deal all the aftermath was. I do have a special place in my heart for her and her husband and my memories of going to church there. Overall, although not spectacular, this is a really engaging read, and I appreciate her perspective on marriage and the destructive things it can endure, with God's help. And it gives me a renewed outlook on what kind if wife I want to be to my husband, shortcomings and all the rest of him :-) I hope this book can bless more women in the same way.
