Writing Jane Austen (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

The back cover description sounded interesting, so I decided, "What the heck? I haven't read a Jane Austen spin-off for a while." I knew it would be fluffy and easy to get into, and it was. But it was also frustrating, because the whole book is about an author with massive writer's block. I suffer enough from that when I'm trying to write term papers about James Joyce, so I didn't particularly enjoy reading about the experience. Also, the characters seemed somewhat flat and very predictable. There were also weird moments when the main character had these strange hallucinations of characters from Jane Austen's books, and a lot of people in her actual life were named after characters from the books and had their personalities, with no explanation. Maybe Aston was trying to show that Jane Austen's characters are archetypal and timeless and that they keep living on through each generation, but it seemed really strange to me. Oh well! I knew what I was getting into when I picked it up. It wasn't a bad book, but I wouldn't really recommend it. I can't believe I enjoyed this book as much as I did. It was fun and cute and all about writing and Jane Austen and Oxford and such things. I got annoyed with the character from time to time - she was so stubborn and always running away from things. But she grew on me. And I did hate the ending. It seemed like such an arduous journey for Georgina to finish writing the book then suddenly, bam, it's done, and everything gets wrapped up in a way-too-perfect epilogue. I would have rather had a little more meat at the end of the story and then leave us guessing about what happens next! But all in all - a really, really fun read!

What do You think about Writing Jane Austen (2010)?

Silly, girly book but enjoyable junk-food reading, especially for a writer.
