You're Not Doing It Right: Tales Of Marriage, Sex, Death, And Other Humiliations (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

This book was a riot. I was the person on the train, head buried in this book, snorting from laughter without ever taking my eyes off the page until I nearly missed my stop. After reading some reviews I had braced myself. I thought I would be more offended. Yet somehow this man weaved humor, insight and frankness in a way that had me nodding my head and ultimately relating to him more often than not. A few times I thought, "Man, he is such an asshole," which was quickly followed by, "Man, does that make me an asshole?" I somehow turned this introspective book about him into a book about me, which I believe is the mark of a successful memoir. I think what softened the edges for me was his raw honesty and self-awareness. It refreshing and much appreciated. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking to laugh heartily (and possibly a tad guiltily). I know MIB from VH1's "I Love the __s" series. As a result, I'm used to his sardonic, sarcastic, satirical comments that accompany various vintage goods/songs on the show. That is the wit with which I fell in love. I'm obviously alone in not really liking him as autobiographical author. That said, I can't say the book isn't funny -- it does have its moments. Maybe if I read it another time/place/state of mind, I would have loved it.
