Zoe Sophia's Scrapbook: An Adventure In Venice (2003) - Plot & Excerpts

This book is charming and special and it made me laugh. I love Zoe Sophia (what a wonderful new character!) and her great aunt Dorothy, and all the other characters too, including the dogs and cats. The relationship of girl and great aunt is very sweet. In diary and scrapbook form, Zoe Sophia (who is nine years old) narrates this, recounting her trip to Venice to visit her great aunt. Because there’s so much to read and look at on every page and it’s so detailed and has lots of little sections, I think it would be enjoyed most by children who can read it to themselves, but it could work as a read (and show) aloud too.The watercolor illustrations are terrific. I especially liked the almost matching glasses Zoe and her aunt wear. The Venice scenes made me long to travel there. The story is amusing and interesting. The reader will learn quite a bit about Venice and they’ll learn some Italian words too, as they’re interspersed throughout the story.I love how the dog and cat go everywhere with this pair. I was entertained by all the information about Venice. The page where Zoe Sophia is in bed but awake late at night worrying about her lost dog is fantastic; it’s priceless what she says to herself about Mickey, her dog. I let out some big guffaws and tears almost came to my eyes too. There’s a sequel: Zoe Sophia in New York The Mystery of the Pink Phoenix Papers which I think I’ll read, despite its relatively low ratings here at Goodreads. At the end of this book there’s a set up to make a place for the sequel.I just found out about this book from my Goodreads friend Kathryn. My branch library had it on the shelf today and I’m so glad. It really tickled my fancy!Claudia Mauner and Elisa Smalley are co-writers; Claudia Mauner painted the illustrations.

What a wonderful book! I read this one for the Goodreads Picture Book group's theme of travel for August. This story told about a little girl's trip to Venice to visit her aunt. Not only was the story well done with the places chosen to visit, but the illustrations were terrific. Zoe's little dog travels with her (on the plane, no less), and meets an Italian cat named Pip. Vocabulary, food, and art is introduced which brought interest to the story for me and I think most children. The story gets exciting when Mickey, the dog, is lost among the canals of Venice. This is a delightful story and I hope this author/illustrator team writes many more books.

Category (Tumble Book- Storybook) Found on blackboard Description1. When a little girl goes to visit her Grandmother in Venice, Italy, she finds so much to do and see. There are museums and artwork abound and G.P, the grandmother, and Zoe finds themselves spending time having fun around Venice, not to mention a gondola driver who almost falls into the water from bowing. Adventure is around every corner even as Zoe loses her dachshund, but does she find him? Find out by reading!Possible use in the classroom2. This particular Tumble Book is a great way for children to experience different languages from different cultures. The book also gives teacher the option to ask questions to see if students were paying attention. For example, what was name of Zoe's dog? Another question could be inference, such "what do you think that Zoe will ever find her dog, or what might happen as a result of losing her dog?Visual elements3. This book not only has a great story; it has great illustrations! On every page, it seems that the story feels warm and happy. The colors are wonderful and exciting to look at. Personal reaction4. Actually, this was my first time reading a tumble book, and I found it really interesting even as an adult; many of the words (Italian) that were used were unknown by me, too. I think that this book is great as children learn many different aspects of another culture.
