青の祓魔師 [Ao No Ekusoshisuto] 1 (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
There are so many similarities between this first volume and the first volume of the manga called Bleach, so much that I almost have to wonder if it's actually coincidental. And because Bleach came out eight years before Blue Exorcist, as well as the fact that I've been reading Bleach before I found out about Blue Exorcist, I am inclined to be more of a Bleach fan and think of that franchise as the "original" if you want to make that particular label. All in all, I don't want to say that Blue Exorcist is unoriginal, the character's origin and apprenticeship is really interesting and unlike any other manga that I've read. (It's really only the situations and characters that feel very influenced by Bleach). Though others may not agree with me or see this comparison that I'm making, and it's not like this volume is unenjoyable after believing in this comparison. In fact, I'm glad I read this volume. And I'm sure that the influence of Bleach will diminish in the second volume. It was just distracting to me personally as I was reading. This book was recommended to me by two friends who knew I loved the TV show "Supernatural" and I have to say that it was a great recommendation. Two brothers fighting demons, the younger one all book smart and the older one more head strong. It's a formula I've grown to love so this book hit it off with me from the start. I'm still getting to know the characters but from what I've seen I'm gonna love them. Can't wait to read more of this series.
