A Brush Of Darkness (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Good but gonna leave it there. Somehow, in a very loose and abstract way, it was a bit too close to the horrors of real life. Like a warped mirror where all of humanity's worst sins are reflected in deformed mockery that still does not change The kidnappings, the betrayals, the suffering, the sacrifice, the consequences and the mental scars. It is just too much for me, so although the storyline is intriguing it is not enough for my continued following of the series. Although I half-heatedly picked up this book, I immediately got immersed in Allison Pang's world of touchstone mortals, fae, daemons, angels, and even a miniature unicorn. Overall, I thought the story was interesting and had enough intrigue that I didn't want to put it down. What I really liked was getting an understanding of Abby, without it being just dumped. At first, you get hints about what happened to her in the past, and slowly, as the story developed and Abby has some growth, her story comes out. My one main complaint is that there wasn't a lot of explanation about the overarching world of Portsmyth. We really don't even know anything about Portsmyth except the tiny bit we see that includes the Pit and Abby's apartment and the Hollows. Also, lots of terms were thrown around with no clear understanding of exactly how this world works. So I did get frustrated early because terms like the Crossroads, touchstones, and keystones weren't really explained. But if you can overlook the lack of explanations, you will gather an understanding of the world. I still have some questions, which is why I gave it 3 stars instead of 4, but I'm hoping it will get fleshed out in the second book. Overall, a solid debut novel by Allison Pang.
