I really wanted to like this book. I heard so many great things about it, how it's what Christian speculative fiction fans have been waiting for...I made it a few chapters and decided to pass on the rest of the book. The characters didn't really jump off the page, and the story world was rather sparse. What drove me to completely give up was the redundancy. The main character is a drunk--I get it. No need to reference it every third line. Overall it just felt that there was too much focus in areas like that, and not enough in building the story world. This is an action packed Christian based fantasy story about a young alcoholic who does anything to get money for more ale. However this assignment starts him on a journey that changes his life and the lives of others. This story is fast paced through most of the book. I found myself crying and laughing and cheering for Errol. He grows in strength ( physical and mental), in wisdom. He does what is necessary to protect the king and Liam whom some believe will be the next king. Clean language but does have some gruesome descriptions during some of the fights. I can't wait to read the next book in this trilogy.
