It feels like an age before I hear the door open but the sound of the hinges and a gust of cooler air make me aware that Miles has come in. At least, I hope it’s Miles. I can’t see a thing with this blindfold on. I make an effort to calm myself. There isn’t anyone else it could be. Of course it’s Miles. I sense the presence in the room. He goes over to the boiling rocks, lifts a ladleful of water and spills it over them. At once there is a fierce hissing and wet steam fills the room. It rolls into my nostrils and lungs, piercing the delicate internal membranes with its eucalyptus sharpness. The hot moisture envelops my skin and my perspiration rises to meet it. I’m hot. Very hot. It’s cleansing but hard to bear as steam coats me inside and out. I try to breathe regularly and keep myself serene in the darkness beneath my blindfold but every nerve ending is alert to where Miles might be. It seems a long time before I sense him close by. There’s a slight creak and a minuscule movement in the bench below me and I guess that he’s down by my feet.
