A Marriage Of Convenience (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
Though the sun was shining in a clear pale sky, the track was rutted hard with frost, and the wind was cold enough to make Clinton’s eyes water. The carman held the reins loosely in his mittened hands, letting the mare trot or walk as she pleased, and this, combined with the old man’s soft melancholy singing, irritated Clinton considerably. When he remonstrated, the driver replied that he had to ‘keep the baste in humour with a song’. ‘Then keep her in motion with a touch of the whip.’With a shrug the man struck the mare lightly with the ends of the reins and she trotted briskly up the next hill before ambling again. On either side were scanty fields drifting from thin grass to bog and back again; a pattern repeated as far as the distant rim of wandering hills. A shimmering lake, with rushes around it, provided momentary diversion from the monotony, as did a group of well-kept cabins, but Clinton was tense and restlessly impatient to reach the next village.
