Abends Um 10 (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

There are many YA books which deal with mental health issues but rarely have I found one which addresses them with such realism. This quiet gem of a book explores the complexities of dealing with a parent with a significant psychiatric disorder and as such should be in every school library. I particularly liked the way Frankie himself worries about becoming like his mother and does indeed display the same fanatical worrying tendencies. The characters, including the minor ones, are beautifully developed and no easy answers are provided at the end; but at the same time the whole book is pervaded with humour. The writing is subtly accomplished – I will be looking for more by this author. Realism is embraced to such an extent, though, that nothing very much happens, and this makes for a slightly unsatisfying read. I loved this book! Written for older children/young adults and set in New Zealand, it is about Frankie a young boy of nearly 13 who is on the cusp of adulthood, and who is beset with worries and fears and angst about so many things - but especially about his mother. Despite this premiss, It is a witty, warm and wonderful read. There are some very good reviews on here expressing the delights of this book much better than I could. Read them and then read the book. Highly recommended.

What a beautiful book. Very bittersweet. A good reminder that every cloud has a silver lining.
