An Offer From A Gentleman (2001) - Plot & Excerpts
The Bridgerton saga continues to amaze me! Although I must say, I liked this one a bit less than the other books. It gets more of a 3.5 rating than 4. Benedict and Sophie's story is a Cinderella retelling, but of course it's much more than just a retelling. All the necessary ingredients to make a perfect Bridgerton novel were present, as usual: the humor, the love, the tears but I got really frustrated with the H&h. Benedict was being an ass when he blackmailed Sophie into working for him. That was not fair of him knowing he could never be with her and would eventually have to get married. Sophie just made things worse but not telling him she was the girl in the Silver Dress, I don't understand why she didn't do it considering things would've obviously changed for the better for her. Still it was a very enjoyable read, and I can't wait to finish the series! I love Cinderella stories!! This book was lovely, and I really wanted to give it 5 stars but I couldn't because of some aspects to this storylineSOPHIA- she is such a strong heroine and her joy and optimism made me like her a lot. She's so sweet despite the hideous life she was born into. I really felt for her- for most of the book. But I just ended up thinking "OKAY, TELL HIM WHO YOU ARE"But honestly this was the only problem I had with her- it was more likely to be my impatience with things not moving along fastenough.BENEDICT- what a sweet guy. I loved him from the beginning when he met Sophie but I just slowly started falling out of love because 1) his persistence that she become his mistress and his anger when she refuses!! I mean, I got the feeling he was a bit of a snob because of the class division between them. In my mind, if he was so madly in love with herthis shouldn't have mattered for a second!! Period. And the audacity to be hurt/angry because she doesn't want to end upin the same position as her mother and do this to her children. Why couldn't he understand! Oh I just couldn't like himmuch for the most part of the second book. This made me question his love for her.Overall, sweet story. The Bridgestons serious is just wonderful. Even when the story is going south the interactionbetween the family keeps you hooked in. Lady Whistledown is amazing. Can't wait to read the rest of the series :)
