The Viscount Who Loved Me (2006) - Plot & Excerpts

Rating: 4.5 / 5I really enjoyed this book. I've been a bit so-so on Quinn lately as her last few books haven't really captivated me. But I wanted to read the Bridgerton series and finally have time to work on it. I'm glad I did read this one. It really kept me reading from the first page to the last.Series Note:Second book in the Bridgerton series. I read the first one a few years back and don't remember a lot of the details, but this one still made sense. So I wouldn't say you have to read the series in order.Summary:Coming from a poorer country family, Kate Sheffield must share her London coming out with her younger half-sister Edwina. Problem is, Kate is just about 21 years old, and next to Edwina, who is considered the beauty of the year, Kate is a hag. She knows she has little chance of landing a husband. So she focuses her attention on her dear sister, making sure only the right men are in the running for Edwina's hand. And that the wrong ones are kept away...rakes and rogues like Anthony, Lord Bridgerton. Unfortunately, Anthony had set his sights on Edwina. He's decided it's time to get married and Edwina seems like good wife material.First he'll have to get through Kate, though. Everyone knows Edwina will listen to Kate about whom she should marry. Kate and Anthony set off sparks from the moment they meet. Kate is convinced Anthony must be a terrible person from all she's heard about him. Anthony just needs to get on her good side so he can marry Edwina. But when the two get to know each other, each is shocked to find they like each other...and more. It's only a matter of time before they find themselves in a compromising situation that will lead to only one conclusion. Review:I read the first book in this series about 5-6 years ago. I don't remember too much about it other than that I liked it a lot and gave it five stars. At time time, I hadn't realized it was part of such a long, popular series, but when I did realize it, I wanted to read the other books. It took me a while to buy them and to find time to get to the series. But I'm glad I kept it on my to-do reading list. This second book was a fun, great read. The initial premise of the story isn't all that unique...the dashing rake and the innocent woman who wants nothing to do with him. But the two have a great chemistry together. I liked how their opinions of each other changed and grew as they really got to know each other. And the scene where they are compromised...well, that was truly unique, if a bit odd, and yet totally fitting to the story.I think my favorite part of this book, though, was the fact that it dealt a lot with fears. Each of the main characters (Anthony and Kate) had something they very strongly feared. For Kate, it was thunderstorms. She's nearly paralyzed with terror when one occurs and must finally confront the fear in the book. And for Anthony, there's a fear of dying young after seeing his Uncle and his Father die before their time. He's very aware of his mortality and truly believes he will die before the age of forty. That aspect of the story was great. It added a really unique tone, something you just don't tend to come across all that much in romance books. I just thought it was very interesting and well done. The way it played out made sense and fit the story. It was great to read how each faced their fears. And as usual with any Quinn book, there's some great humor. I couldn't help but chuckle at various parts of the story. Quinn has a knack for subtle and outright humor.I can see why this Bridgerton series is popular. After reading the first two books and liking both, I'm looking forward to moving on to the next one.

Viscount Anthony Bridgerton feels he’s running out of time, thinking he would die young like his father, decided to finally marry and sire an heir before his young death. When he picks out the beauty of the season, he feels everything would go smoothly, he would have a agreeable marriage with no risk to his heart….that is until he meets his intended’s older sister. Kate Sheffield will not have a well-known rake like Anthony anywhere near her sister! Doing everything in her power to prevent a marriage between the two at any means possible. As both fight a battle of wills they can’t resist the attraction that flare between and the risk it does to their hearts… It took me a few chapters to really warm up to Anthony, I didn’t care for attitude or the way he treated Kate with one part that made me mad when they bit and kicked one another. Although no blood was shed or anyone really hurt (much how children horseplay) I just couldn’t feel anything for Anthony until he started to really open up and show not the peer façade but, the man who lost his father at a tender age and became the head of his beloved family. Growing up with a fear he may as well end up like his father. This is the man that really drew me into the story, although sometimes fear can be irrational, I could really understand and feel for him, as it took a lot to face his demons. Kate also helped Anthony face his fears, as he did for her, Kate never backed down from Anthony and didn’t pull her punches, and while at times she did seem a little weak in the knees around him, she wasn’t alone in that matter as the spark of desire flared hot between the two as they both ended up kissing one another or more. The couple started out at each other throats, but really grew to understand and fall in love with one another bringing out an inner strength in each other. The steam and tension was always there, but the love scenes don’t come until later and call me prudish or a romantic fangirl but I really love when the love scene is worked toward then the main leads just jumping into bed the first chapter or page. There’s always a classic or memorable scene in each of JQ’s books and TVWLM wasn’t an exception with the crazy Pall Mall game playing out with a mallet of death and everyone out to ruin the other’s game. Kate showing Anthony she can be just as evil and sly as he. It had me laughing and re-reading the game scene a few times over. The Bridgerton family is still a riot as they lead a helpful and not so helpful hand to the wayward couple.(Benedict and Colin eating walnuts and smashing them on the desk while Anthony had a hangover was true family love) As always the true scene stealer is the great Lady Whistledown and she always gives hints and acts sometimes as a commenter to the events unfolding with her gossip column. Overall: a truly delightful read, with a great message of learning to conquer any fears with a love and understanding. Another amazing JQ read!

What do You think about The Viscount Who Loved Me (2006)?

Overall it’s good but I didn’t really like Anthony all that much –he was too “hot” or “bossy” or something at times, can’t quite put my finger on it. I liked Kate and I felt sorry for her, but I thought she could have had more inner strength especially towards Anthony. There are a few scenes where you get teary eyed because of some very strong emotions that surface. Lady Whistledown is a riot yet again! The story itself is very well-written with a lot of fun smiling moments. Could’ve had some more steamy scenes and earlier on too. When the Bridgerton family comes together that's when it's the best and you start laughing your head off :D This story really made me want to read about Colin whose story comes up in book 4.**This is one of the very few mass market books that is actually well-bound. Reading it “normally” the book still looks new and you barely see a crinkle in the spine. If only other publishers would follow suit!

After reading the first book in Julia Quinn’s fantastic “Bridgerton” series, The Duke and I I just had to check out the second book in series “The Viscount Who Loved Me” and man, was I blown away by this book!Anthony Bridgerton, who is well-known as being London’s most notorious rake, takes London by storm when he decides that he wants to get married and he has his sights set on Edwina Sheffield. However, Anthony will soon realize that this is not an easy task as he has to impress Edwina’s older sister, Kate Sheffield, who refuses to let Anthony marry her sister due to his reputation as a rake. Even though Anthony gets so annoyed with Kate at times, he will soon realize that he might have feelings for Kate whether he likes it or not!Julia Quinn has done it again with writing a brilliant romance story that not only gives us the best back and forth bantering between the two lead characters, but also gave us a great insight on conquering our fears for the sake of love! I loved the way that Julia Quinn wrote each character in this novel as they were truly memorable and they made me relate to the characters’ predicaments. I especially loved the relationship that Anthony shared with his siblings, especially Colin and Benedict as there were several moments in the novel where Anthony was considering killing his brothers for annoying him to death, but it is clearly shown that he cares about them at the same time. I also loved Kate’s relationship with her stepsister Edwina as it has been stated many times that Edwina is way more beautiful than Kate, but Kate still cares about Edwina’s well being and would do anything to make her happy. Probably my most favorite characters in this novel were Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sheffield themselves! I have to honestly say that Anthony Bridgerton is officially one of my most favorite romance heroes of all-time (man, I have been saying that for every romance novel I had read)! Anyway, Anthony Bridgerton is just one amazing hero as he has sharp wit while being kind hearted towards anyone at the same time. I loved his relationship with Kate as he often gets frustrated with her since he thinks she is annoying and yet, it is clear as day that he has feelings for her, but often has trouble trying to reciprocate those feelings to her. Kate Sheffield is truly one of the best romance heroines I had ever read as she shows true determination in doing what is best for the people she cares about and I also loved her back and forth bantering with Anthony as she seems to be the only character (other than Anthony’s siblings) who can talk back to Anthony with such fire and wit! As for the love scenes between Anthony and Kate, OH MAN, were they HOT and SIZZLING and I just could not stop reading those love scenes between Kate and Anthony without feeling deep anticipation! For anyone who does not like sex scenes, there are plenty of sex scenes in this novel that are quite graphic and you can skim over them if they are uncomfortable to read through.Overall, “The Viscount Who Loved Me” is truly one romance novel that every fan of Julia Quinn’s works and fans who love pure, raw romance should definitely check out! Now, I am off to read the third book in the “Bridgerton” series, An Offer From a Gentleman!Review is also on: Rabbit Ears Book Blog
