“Where else would I be?” he asked, playing off the relief in her voice. The distance made him sound a little tinny, albeit without the static of the cell phones. “Leading your own rescue effort?” Selena took a deep mental breath, surprised by how much hearing his voice meant to her. She was here, she was tough, she was doing what needed to be done…but she was grateful for the emotional anchor all the same. That’s not how you felt when you took this post. As if she could afford to get tangled up in such thoughts just now. “You all right?” he asked, and he didn’t sound quite as cool anymore. “Just…distracted.” And far too acutely aware that this might be her only chance to get tangled up in such thoughts at all. “I’m in the PM’s office…I don’t think they’re hunting me yet.” Yet. When they realized one of their men had gone missing, they might start taking her more seriously.
