This book was the right read at the right time, which can definitely affect how one responds. It is a light, fun take on the Greek pantheon. While the classics major in me took exception to some aspects of the book (such as how the author decided which gods would be children and which would be adults and her description of Dionysus as having horns, something more befitting of Pan than Dionysus -- careful, he's a vengeful one as we learn in The Bacchae!), I took it for what it is, a book about being the new kid in school. The new kid just happens to be Athena.I particularly love how the Hero-ology class works. It reminds me of my favorite episode of "Wishbone" when they take on The Aeneid. (Side review: A total rip-off of The Odyssey and not even a good one at that. "See that island? That's where the Cyclops live." "Oh, then let's not go there." "Okay." They sail away, avoiding said island.) "Wishbone" nails how the great epics are all about the gods interfering with the lives of mortals. The Hero-ology class in this book, too, nails this concept. I loved this book, it was short but it was very sweet. I loved all the characters we know from mythology portrayed as teenagers, it was fun, original and very exciting. The whole concept of the school and how it was run was amazing. There was so much I loved about this book and I cannot think of one thing I disliked apart from it ending, thank goodness there's more books in the series.I loved the character Athena, she was one of the mythological characters I knew less about, it was fun to see her grow and interact. Medusa lived up to her reputation, how she got the snakes was a brilliant idea.I am not sure what else I can say, other than read it :)5 out of 5 stars
