He’s sitting behind his desk, and he looks up at me when he hears me come in. His blue eyes connect with mine, and I immediately notice that there’s something different about him. Unlike all of the other times that I’ve been in his office, this time there is not even the barest of hints that he’s happy to see me. His jaw is set and there’s an iciness in the way he regards me that sends a chill down my spine. It’s off-putting. I’m not used to getting this kind of reaction from him. “Sofie... Please, have a seat.” He gestures at one of the chairs across from him. Even his tone sounds cold. Wade’s eyes track me the whole way across the room, until I take a seat. Silence passes between us while he studies me. I fight the urge to shift uncomfortably under the weight of his stare, wondering what exactly he’s thinking right then. Did he want to meet me for a reason, or does he plan to just stare at me for the rest of the morning? “It’s good to see you again,” he says.
