She sat on the bathroom floor clinging to Keegan, rocking him back and forth. His pajamas were soaked with her tears. He had quieted down and stopped crying himself, now he just stared blankly at the floor with this thumb in his mouth. She stretched out her legs and groaned from her stiff muscles and joints. Her tailbone hurt from sitting on the hard tile floor. She’d heard Paul leave a long time ago, probably over an hour, but couldn’t bring herself to open the door. She felt safe in the small room, locked away from the horrors of her dreams and the man she thought she was falling for. Kelly blew her nose and looked at her son, hating herself. She thought she’d saved him from the unstable and violent life back home with Don and now here it was starting all over again.
