Blind Blondie (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Fairly enjoyable, but too short for the amount of drama piled onto the end. IMO it would have been better without that entirely, or if the thing with the dog was moved to the end, so we can see a change in how Sam thinks about the dog and let that be our big clue about how much he’s developed. I really enjoyed Sam; he’s an asshat, but for all we know he might actually be a slightly unreliable narrator about himself because he’s built some walls there. We’re not getting as much about Kieran (since we’re not in his head), and I wish we did. Sam converts too quickly from asshat to perfect sweetheart. And the pacing is off due to the extra drama at the end; the story ends too quickly afterwards, and it feels like a waste of emotions. But there’s enough stuff to like here; Sam’s entertaining, Kieran is fiercely independent and competent and gives Sam sufficient amounts of shit for being an asshat, and both the dog and Kieran’s protective concierge are nice touches. Thoroughly enjoyable story about a beach bum who hits on a blind man. The narrator, Sam Campbell, is at first a thoroughly unlikeable arse who picks men for one-night stands, often by rating them on their beauty in a Speedo. He falls for the gorgeous blind man he sees standing at the side of the road and offers a lift to.At first he doesn't realise how much he's falling for Kieran, he just thinks he's hung up on him after Kieran reports him to the police for impersonating a taxi driver. But once Sam does get it he pursues Kieran with dogged and admirable perseverance, and becomes a better man once he realises what a struggle Kieran's life has become and how bravely he's been facing it alone. Sam becomes energised and finds new purpose once he sees this, and the resolution is very pleasing.Good stuff.
