Manbot (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I thought this was a super fun little read! I'm a huge science fiction fan and love anything and everything involving androids, so of course when I heard about this I just had to get my hands on a copy. And it did not disappoint. I read it all in one sitting, when I should have been studying (oops). I love the relationship between Kavan and Gray, and seeing the way that Kavan's emotional programming was growing to adapt to his emotions (I am such a sucker for this when it comes to androids) as he fell more in love with Gray. The only problem I find with it is that it seems to have a far larger scope than the novella format can handle. It is incredibly fast paced and tried to fit in a deeper meaning, over android rights I think, and it seemed a bit awkward. Honestly, I would have been perfectly happy to read all about the budding relationship between Gray and Kavan, and more happy android domestic fluff/porn for the entire ~120 pages. It would have been a lot better if it was a trilogy or series of novellas that gradually began to introduce these elements rather than just mashing it all together and trying to make it fit in the limited amount of space. Otherwise, I really liked it and found the erotica really hot and a little funny, especially when Kavan was clinically describing everything he was going to do with Gray (another thing I am a sucker for when it comes to androids, haha!). Definitely would recommend for robot lovers ;D Every household in the US is issued a standard housebot to make life easier. When Gray Benedict learns that his friend, as well as other citizens, are using their housebots for "additional services", he experiences a mixture of curiosity and moral indignity. When he finds that his own housebot, Kavan, is willing to add these services to his duties, Gray is reluctant to take advantage of his housebot, even though he is keenly attracted to him, not to mention lonely. Gray must struggle with his moral dilemma, his growing attraction towards Kavan, plus his own sense of self-worth - what kind of man would resort to turning to his housebot for affection? This book packed a lot into a few pages. I think this could have been a full length novel, but I was not disappointed in what the book did deliver. Very interesting concept and I liked that the POV switched so that we could get inside Kavan's head for a bit as well.
