Broken Symmetry (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I downloaded this for free from Amazon. As I was reading it, I wasn't too impressed, worth reading when taking public transit. I find that I think back to it frequently now that I am done reading it. It has had an impact on me that I didn't see happening. I think the writing was a little light, that main character was somewhat annoyingly young (teenager that I wanted to smack upside the head a number of times) but the story was crafted very well. Holy shit this book.Prepare for it to screw with your mind.Let's start with the premise of the book...16 year old Blaire has lost her father right before he died he gave her a journal. However the journal is held with the police for evidence. She wants to find out why he died and what happened so when she can't get the journal back and the police tell her that her dads former boss Charles is a suspect, she tries to get a job with him to try to figure out what happened. Upon working there she finds out that her fathers job wasn't what she thought it was. The workers there can cross through mirrors and "break symmetry." Then all of the craziness begins...This book is very sciency (pretend that's a real word) and if you don't know much about quantum physics you might be a bit confused. When Charles was explaining how breaking symmetry worked, she seemed to get it most of the time but there was times where I was confused. I do wish Dan Rix would've dummed it down a little so that readers who don't know much about science would understand but the book was enjoyable anyway. The characters...At first I wasn't too sure that I liked our protagonist, Blaire. In the beginning she was kind of bitchy and stuck up. As the book goes on she develops quite a bit. She was also funny and I loved her sarcasm and her interactions with Damian. I loved Damien right off the bat. I loved his sarcasm and his charm.Charles was a very interesting character to me because I never knew if I could trust him or not. Sometimes he would seem like he was but then he'd say something and I'd question his motives. Was he good? Or bad? You'll just have to read the book..There is romance in this book but it doesn't overpower it at all. It was simple and sweet and I loved it. The main premise of it was the symmetry breaking and the worlds that were in them. Overall I loved this book. It really makes you think and it was interesting learning about physics, although most of it I didn't really understand. The story kept you on your toes and was never slow. It wasn't predictable for the most part or cliche. I definitely would recommend this book!
