Chelkash And Other Stories (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
This follows the story of a young man(Gavrila) who is looking for work down the shipyard/docks. He's looking to earn enough money to travel back to his hometown. He comes across the town drunkard, Chelkash, and Chelkash offers him a job. Not asking any questions, the man agrees and they set out in boat and head out to sea. The young man realizes too late that he is part of a huge heist. Chelkash promises him plenty of money when they arrive back home, and, reluctantly, Gavrila takes the deal. The robbery goes off well and they end up back at the docks. Gavrila is given his share, and Chelkash tells him of his plans on how he is going to spend his money; wasting it all on alchohol. Gavrila suddenly becomes overwhelmed with greed, and he throws a rock at Chelkash. Gavrila immediately feels badly about his actions and pleads forgiveness from Chelkash. Disgusted at Gavrila, Chelkash throws the rest of the money at him. Gavrila seems to go into it with the thought process of "If only I could have enough money to do this, then I would be happy". In this case, all he wanted was to return home and live as a free man. Somewhere during the last talk he was having with Chelkash, that all changed in an instant.
