Chocolate And Vicodin: My Quest For Relief From The Headache That Wouldn't Go Away (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Just reading about someone else's headache made mine worse, much of the time. But that's okay, because it was interesting to read about all of the options Jennette tried to rid herself of her headache, and how futile some of those options were. First on my list is trying acupuncture, because how she described it sounded A-OK. What the hell, right? I've only had a headache since I was 19, it certainly can't hurt. Her descriptions of what it's like to live with a headache, to be chronically ill with something that's invisible, were spot on, which I definitely related to. I really wanted to like this book and I really thought I would...but I didn't. The author came across as boring and whiny and not someone I could relate to or sympathize with. I was put off by her unexamined skepticism and ignorant comments about alternative approaches to dealing with her headaches. I'm not an ardent fan of naturopathy and alternative medicine, but I am open to new ideas and willing to consider that allopathic medicine does not always have the answer. It was annoying that she was so closed to new approaches. She tried a few things, but grudgingly and dismissively, and made comments that showed she clearly didn't understand anything about the intent of the treatment. She really seemed to lack insight into this whole process and experience. I get that she's in pain, which maybe made it hard to have great insight, but if that's the case then maybe she didn't need to write a book about it.

What do You think about Chocolate And Vicodin: My Quest For Relief From The Headache That Wouldn't Go Away (2000)?

Unfortunately for Fulda, her book suffers from comparison to All in My Head by Paula Kamen.

I wished for a little more technical specifics, but then that's my scientist side showing.
