Christmas At Rose Hill Farm: An Amish Love Story (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
Suzanne Woods Fisher has a wonderful way of allowing me to connect with whatever character she is writing about. The stories always seem real, and I always find myself thinking of the characters long after the final page is read. With Christmas at Rose Hill Farm, there is a bit of mystery, and of course romance, but there is plenty of information about roses as well, and honestly reading this book makes me want to try my hand at growing some!Bess Riehl loves Billy Lapp but when he left the Amish community she had to move on, and now she is getting read to marry his cousin Amos, but when a rare rose is discovered at Rose Hill Farm Billy, who is sort of an expert on roses comes back to identify the rose. Of course this stirs up all kinds of feelings, not only for him but Bess as well. How will this affect Bess and her wedding plans? A short but satisfying read that certainly is perfect for the Christmas season. A complimentary copy of this book was provided for review. I never read Amish fiction unless it is a Christmas novel. This being a Christmas novel and Amish, I requested it. I did enjoy the book. I liked the main characters, especially Billy Lapp, a young man who had lost his way. There is a lot in the book about roses, different kinds of roses, and rose rustling - which really exists and is not at all what it sounds like. I don't have much interest in flowers, but reading about that in a fictional book setting was very interesting. The book also dealt with the issue of forgiveness and it was covered very well. It is a pretty fast read, and entertaining. Sometimes I wonder how close to the Amish ways the books depict the Amish, but this was one I felt stayed pretty true. There was one thing that confused me a bit. One of the characters was named Lainey, and unless I missed it, it was never said who she was. She was evidently related to the main female character, but I don't think it ever said. The book was good though, and an enjoyable Christmas read.
