I wrapped my arms around him and kissed his cheek, and then I begged him to return to me as soon as he could. “I love you,” I whispered urgently as he weaved us back to the beach house. I watched as he touched his fingers to his lips and then extended them toward me, and I prayed it wouldn’t be the last time I saw him. Pepper and I spent the next several hours consoling each other.
