De Dochters Van De Meestersmid (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
Love's Reckoning is a gripping tale of love, struggle, and growth. Even though some of the characters' actions aren't Christian, it has themes of truth and hope. It is one of the best novels I've ever read. I didn't think a certain upsetting plot twist was needed late in the book, but the author made up for it in the end. The book has charm, twists, loveable characters, and detestable ones. I could picture Eden and Silas clearly, and wanted them to get together more than any other fictional couple. Everyone has to find their way in life and learn their own lessons. This made-up Scottish smithy and forgotten daughter are among them. This book is the first in a series of the Ballantyne Legacy. The story is mostly set in Pennsylvania and the way the author describes every detail of what a woman had to do every day to keep a house running, or the workings of what is expected of an apprentice, a blacksmith apprentice to be exact, is so real you can feel like you are right there working beside them. In fact, the apprentice is expected to marry the owner’s daughter, and he has two. Which one shall it be?Eden is a young girl with a very soft heart. She hurts no one and feels everyone’s pain. Eden has a dream that she has only shared with some close friends who live nearby in a place with lots of money. Silas is an apprentice, with not much time left on his contract. Silas has a dream also and is working very hard to make it a reality.Silas is a man of faith, you can see it lived out every day of his life. Eden can see it and can’t help but wonder is this something that she wants. Eden’s father has always banned his family from attending church. You know there’s a story behind that?I love this story from the first page to the last. It captured my attention so much I read it through in two days, couldn’t put it down. The love and the hurts became a part of me as I read, I could feel each characters feelings of hurt, pain, abandonment, longing, and joy.I can’t wait to read the second book now. I would recommend this to ones who like historical fiction, love and romance, secrets and longings, and joy.
