The Frontiersman's Daughter (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

I'd say 3.75. I had a hard time putting it down. I really like how Laura Frantz' characters learn and grow. I like how she doesn't compartmentalize religion and daily living, but mingles them, as it should be. This book was wonderful, it just needed more in some parts and less in others. I'd like to hear more about her experiences while at Briar Hill. Oh, and I'd like to take a trip to Scotland with them :). Each of her books are so enjoyable and a worthwhile read. Plus, I love learning bits of history from this time and place. This is the story of a Frontiersman's Daughter. It is not a typical romance, since there are three men that Lael is involved with in the story and who she will end up with is a mystery for most of the book. But it does have romance. The writing is good. The novel is long, over 400 pages, and I am not sure everything had to be there. It could have been a much tighter book, I didn't see that everything written had to be there. But I did enjoy being in that world, despite the length. I've read some long novels, but I need to feel that what is there HAS to be there, and I didn't get that sense with this story. Also, I couldn't figure out why the novel was set during the Revolutionary War. The war barely figured into the plot and did not seem to affect the characters at all. Plus, it read more like a pioneer story than a colonial story. There were things like Lael's "faded bonnet" that felt more 19th century than 18th century to me. Most women's caps during that period would have been white or light, so no way for the sun to fade them much. But I'm glad I read it and it was worth the read to meet the characters.

Didn't finish this one, as I became bored after reading about a quarter of the book.

It was a pretty good read. It did drag in some places but the ending was very good.
