Although I did not get absorbed by the story and I had trouble understanding and identifying with the main character, I have to admit that this book is very well written. There is nothing superflous about the writing and I really like it that the language is very clear and straight to the point. I also like the distance the very author towards himself and I quite enjoyed the tragicomic and sarcastic tone of the book. Just what you'd expect from Houellebecq: grim, existential realism, with a healthy dose of satire. Some great writing in this one, although it was on course for three stars until part 3, where it really picked up. Normally an author referencing themselves would be annoying, but Houellebecq, of course, is less than complimentary about himself and dishes up a grim fate. A really good writing, if you like depressing novels about how we're all going to die - probably horribly - and there's no point to doing anything. Which, fortunately, I do.
