Dead On The Delta (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

If you have an anti-heroine, can it still be urban fantasy? I guess so. Dead on the Delta is the chronicle of the long, booze-soaked, bayou slogging, ex-boyfriend disappointing, slacker life of FCC (that's Fairy Capture and containment) agent Annabel Lee.One of the few immune to the nasty, madness-causing fairy bites, its her job to go beyond the iron fence between fairy-infested wilderness and the town of Donaldsonville, head into the Louisiana bayou and get samples of Fairy poo for scientists to study. Only this most recent trip isn't routine. An invisible hand socks her in the head. And a drug-crazed woman tries to drown her. And then Annabel makes some baaaaad choices that end up with her job on the line and her ex boyfriend and the ex boyfriend's new girlfriend as her judge. Not a nice position to be in. Annabel's life is long train wreck, and as she investigates the murder of a child and the mystery of the woman who attacked her in the bayou, she continues to make terrible choices-- many of them involving copious amounts of alcohol and stomping on the heart of her current ex-boyfriend.Despite the long train wreck, and the needlessly over-complicated plot surrounding the dead girl (and can I saw ew to the motive Annabel uncovers for this) and Annabel's toings and froings for little information, it was fun because the characters surrounding Annabel are so great. Her ex, ex boyfriend is swoon worthy in an earthy way, her policeman ex-boyfriends sister who can get away with assault in this small town, the flaming gay in small town Louisiana friend fingered for murder, and the mysterious invisible people all combine to keep you reading on.The end of the book wraps up the murders nicely while implanting seeds for a broader story arc surrounding the mysterious invisible people and Annabel's own sudden changes. I'll definitely go on to check out the next one. 2.5 stars. Hmmm... There were many points that I almost didn't finish this one. The main character reminded me a lot of Chess from Downside Ghosts (not a bonus for me but I know Chess is a favorite for many readers). The mystery and world building held my attention, and the section from 75% to 95% was gold - so exciting. I didn't like the ending though and the possible love triangle (or love square?) set up for the next book. I'll probably pass on the second book.

What do You think about Dead On The Delta (2011)?

While the story was interesting the heroine just seemed too much of a mess for me to get into it.
