Devil's Food Cake (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

I liked the ending better than the beginning. I had read two other books in this series and I found the m.c. quite annoying during the first quarter of this book. Sadie redeemed herself at the end and took a lot of abuse in solving this murder and involving her son and some other characters along the way. She has to find who murdered the agent of the writer of a book Devilish Details. It all seems to be solved by the group of people around her not the police, when after the police bring them all in and things are supposedly settled, a new twist at the end brings the case open and a new ending. And at the end Sadie finds a little more romantic connection to Pete the detective. I am glad I finished it and found the two endings. I've heard such great things about this series and was glad to see the audiobooks finally made it out of the 20th century and onto audible. I'm not normally one to go for murder mysteries. I've read a few and enjoyed them but do tend to be pulled to other genres. Initially, I found Sadie a little irritating. This is the third book in the series but my first one to read. The term "busybody" seemed justly earned. However, it wasn't enough to stop me from listening.I'm VERY glad I didn't stop. As the story progressed and Sadie's busybodyness started being justified, I found myself trusting her instincts. The characters did some outrageous things some times (kidnapping, burglary, etc.--and these are the good guys), but I found myself really liking them. There were a few things that weren't resolved that I might have liked to have seen explained, but it didn't ruin the story by any means. And maybe they will be addressed in later books. As for the mild romantic element, I saw Pete on a bad day and don't have her first two books' worth of experiences with him. For me, I'm rooting for Clyde.
