When I saw, from reading the back of the book, that the main character in this is in Boston, I picked it up to read because I was taking a trip there myself later that week. I haven't read anything else from this author, and apparently this book was part of a series. The book occasionally referenced previous "cases" she has solved, that probably were pertinent to the main story in this novel, but I didn't feel like it was necessary to have read her previous books in order to enjoy this one. I love the recipes scattered throughout it, I even tried one and it was wonderful! I'll probably read more of her books in her "dessert" series. A friend gave me this book and wow was it terrible. For starters the main character is a 56 year old lady who grinds her own wheat and balks at those who eat canned green beans. It was hard to find anything in common with her. She's supposed to be a crime solver but spends most of the book butting into the lives of her boyfriend's son's neighbors. The mystery itself was weird and confusing. When it came to the big reveal of who the bad guy was the mystery made even less sense. One redeeming quality of the book is that there are various recipes throughout so you can cook what she cooks. Kind of a fun idea but I'm wary of recipes that come from a lady who refuses to use cake mixes.
The Sadie Hoffmiller books get better with each installment. This mystery was the most enjoyable so far for me, and Sadie is becoming less annoying -- I'd say she's actually becoming likable! I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series. That being said, this book felt about 50 pages too long for me. (Which could be due to the fact that I skipped ahead to see "whodunnit", so I was anxious for the story to progress.)

This was a fun book! It's a mystery just my speed. I don't like the really creepy ones and this one was light and funny and I appreciate that there are authors out there that cater to me. Sadie is a great character who just happens to fall into sticky situations quite often. She has a kind heart and in today's world that's hard to find. I find her refreshing. This was a great book for October!
