Die Dunklen Gassen Des Himmels (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I've read Tad Williams fantasy books The Dragonbone Chairs series, and was totally fascinated by the storyline...a la "Lord of the Rings" style. This book I chose to read based on the fact that it was the same author. I knew it wasn't like the Dragonbone stories, but I gave it a try. It took awhile for me to get into the story, but once I committed to it....I enjoyed it. Would it be one of those I'd read again later on...no I really liked this book, the concepts and characters were pretty great. My main gripes are with the fact that the main plot itself in the end felt extremely flimsy and it is almost like nothing is resolved by the conclusion, making the story itself almost feel a bit pointless. This could easily be due to the book being the first in a planned trilogy, thus what we have is more setup, hence a few dangling threads remaining, the problem with that for me is that it still makes the piece feel incomplete despite word that these book could still be read standalone and nothing would be lost. There was one subplot in particular involving a certain demon that I found unnecessary and a bit out of place, though I saw by the end that this had only been inserted in to give setup for the followup to this book, Happy Hour in Hell. I also enjoyed the descriptions the author gave us, but sometimes when he was describing locales around the setting of Jude City, it felt like these went on for longer than I could really hold interest and I was eager to see the plot move forward. I would still recommend this book as I certainly found enjoyment in it, it was just like fast food in this case in which after it was done I was left feeling rather empty.
