Don't Look (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

3/5A well crafted short story which enjoys a bitter-sweet rather than typical HEA ending. Plot: it reinvents the whole m/m angel theme, investing things with less supernatural fluffyness and a whole lot more emotional trauma and realism. The plot gravitates around the pain of loss, and the pacing is about right. Though I think the plot could have benefited more with more length and greater characterisation. Some scenes with Sean and the parents (both his and Christians) would have been nice, it would really have drawn out the bitterness in the ending more. We are told Sean mother is more like a good friend than a mother, then I'd appreciate having seen this more.On whole, the plot could do with more generic scenes too, more snap shots of Sean alone, caught up in his despair with his Christian helpless to do anything about it.So my criticism with plot is simple: its too short. More length could easily be attained and some simple scenes could enhance the potency of the ending nicely. Characterisation: could have done with some more, easily achieved if we actually 'met' the parents of both protagonists. That way you get the chance to inject human moments which emphasise character traits... which all add up to give us readers more 'feel' for the protagonists. This said, the characterisation is there, and very well done too! Summation? Read this, but beware if HEA fluff is what you demand this isn't for you. In fact, this is a short story for adults, don't mistake this for y/a fiction. It really isn't, this grapples with very adult themes of depression, romantic loss and considerations of suicide. This is a prove that free stories can be as good as books for which we have to pay. They just usually don't have as many reviews. It's such a shame ;( Well, I found it and had an opportunity to read. Can't say that I regret. This short story is about loss, grief, undying love, friendship and magic. It's kind of sad and the HEA is not your usual good ending. Yes, they are together at the end, but nothing is for free. Not to mention that I wanted to hug those guys, cause I couldn't stand their sadness ;) It was cute, adorable and so on, and, at the same time, heartbreaking. Thank you, Mrs. O'Shea :)
