I liked this book, but not as much as the first in the series. This book focuses on Anna, the daughter of Celia West (a non-powered daughter of Spark and Captain Olympus) and Dr. Mentes. And while Anna is superpowered, it's not quite the power she was hoping for. She has the ability to locate people. Certainly, that is similar to her father's mental abilities, but since we know that superpowers are genetic to some degree, it seems odd that there's nothing similar to either of her grandparents (fire powers and invulnerability/strength). Her mother even took in a dose of the radiation that caused the superpowers to form in the first generation, so I kinda expected Anna (and perhaps her sister Bethy) to end up with something more powerful than what she ended up with.I'm guessing the author realized she had a good thing going with the first book, and Celia's struggle with not having superpowers in a family bursting with them. So she underpowered Anna, to get a similar vibe, and it just didn't work as well. The mysterious, working behind the scenes, supervillain The Executive, also never really panned out for me. It was never a mystery to me as the reader, and the reasons for the eventual climactic battle never made sense to me. I suppose being psychotic is an excuse there, but the Executive fizzled for me. A long setup occupies the first 2/3's of the story. More typical of the way stories should be scripted, but perhaps not fast paced enough for the younger audience. Have I just dated myself? I did enjoy how this story extrapolated from After the Golden Age. Not really a sequel. If you have not read the first, you can still enjoy the second without much problem. In many ways it is a better start to a series than the first book. It is a coming of age tale of teenagers learning and growing into their new found powers. I did wonder when the bad guy was going to enter into the story. It just seemed a bit too late. Overall, I liked it as much as the first book, if not more.Have a GoodReads!
What do You think about Dreams Of The Golden Age (2014)?
Not as good as the first one, much more treading water. Still a breezy, light read.
