English Trifle (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

This is a cozy murder mystery about Sadie, a 56-year old widow, who thinks she's a detective. This one takes place in England and has a dead body who disappears and then reappears.I guess the thing that kind of bugged me about this novel was that Sadie seemed to be a nosy, busy body. I've liked her character in the other books better. However, there were some funny parts, and I liked the mystery. I would also like to try the recipes. This book is mainly for young adult. The setting is modern time it fits very well and wouldn't be as good a book in another time period. Sadie: age 56 very smart, nosey, and investigative. Brenna: Sadie's daughter, smart, loves animals, in love with and earl, and like her mother investigative. Sadie and Brenna decide to take a trip to London to visit Brenna's boyfriend Liam. Only to find out he is an earls son. While on their visit they go into a large family room only to find a dead man stuck to the wall stabbed with a fireplace poker. The go for help, but not one is around. They enter the kitchen only to send one of the cooks screaming from the room. They find Austin the cousin of Liam. When they take Austin to see the body it's gone. The body, poker, blood, wall damage, and all. A missing cook, a rude very suspicious cousin, a greedy aunt, and an overly nice butler. Who could have done it? It is an amazing book and until the end you can't even begin to guess who really killed John Henry. It keeps you on your toes you never know what will happen on the next page. Two quotes that I liked are: "He made me promise if something happened, I'd disappear." (Pg 18) " I'll get him to let us by" " Chocolate chip cookies?, Coconut Macaroons dipped in chocolate? Bingo" (Pg 156) A good theme for the book is Don't trust people you don't know. I think anyone would like this book even my dog would like this book.
