I've read a couple of Heather Graham's books that focus on Salem and they both have drawn me in wholeheartedly. The way the author describes the city, the people and the time of year that the book's set in, it makes you want to plan a vacation there and experience it yourself. The mystery, twist and turns the story takes as you read it are what keep you enthralled. There were a couple of times I figured out who had done it and then another twist happened and I was partially wrong, I like that in a story. The only thing I've come to dislike is the seemingly predictable way that many of the stories have two guilty parties; or at least two. I'd like to see one, which there could already be a book she's written where there's only one person guilty but that I haven't read yet. I actually really liked this book. Heather Graham does a great job intertwining a modern day murder with the history of Salem, Massachusetts which is an unusual setting in itself. FBI agent Jenna Duffy is part of a unit that specializes in paranormal cases. In this particular case, someone is brutally murdering people with an axe, and Jenna uses her gift to interact with ghosts to help reveal who the real killer is. One of the ghosts happens to be Rebecca Nurse who was famous for being hanged during the Salem Which Trials. I personally like when an author is able to take the past and connect it to the present. Graham also gives us a modern day look at Salem as she sets the book during Halloween time when there is a Haunted Happenings festival going on and the Wiccan culture is thriving. She painted the town as happy, fun, and not at all like it was in the 1600's. When I got the book from the library, I didn't realize that this was the fourth in a series. I definitely will be checking out the first three.
