Not my favorite book in the series. I liked Bruno from the last story but I wasn't really excited about the heroine nor the mystery part of the story. I found myself skipping that part to try to find out why the two were so attracted to each other - didn't really find out. Again I like when the characters from the previous books make an appearance and I continue to see their characters and lives develop. That makes it worth it to keep reading - 1 more book in this series to go and then I can be done! Lily Parr & Bruno Ranieri. Lily's father, Howard who has been trying to kill himself since Lily was about 11 years old told Lily about people who are after him and her. He told Lily to go find the son of Magda Ranieri, who can lock in something. Soon after her father told Lily about Magda, Lily was chased by two guys, one was a cabbie to her father's care home. She escaped the two guys in NYC and went into hiding, and looking for Bruno in Washington. She found his diner, and on the third evening, she and Bruno talked and got together after his shift. Lily wants to talk to Bruno about the lock/key, but not trusting him yet she sleeps with him. Lily is pretty bitchy sometimes. Bruno called Aaro for help, and goes to uncle Tony's cabin. Bruno contacted Sean McLoud, and he comes to assist. Aunt Rosa who was helping out McCloud kids, was in a baby product store. While she was there with Miles accompanying her, the couple with two kids who looked like Bruno and Magda took Rosa's attention. Her purse was bugged then. So Zoe, one of King's operatives heard most of the conversation/plan between Sean and Bruno and followed Sean to Tony's cabin. Nadia, another operative went after Aaro, slept with him, tried to knock him out with a spray, but he captured her. Aaro took her to Detective Pietri, because she is a connection to the Bruno's case, but she took one of her chemical weapons and died in front of the detective and Aaro. The cabin where Lily and Bruno stayed at was attacked soon after Sean showed up. Zoe/nurse of Howards tried to kill Lily, and King's two other operatives died. Bruno, Lily and Sean regrouped at Tam's house, and Kev and Edie returned from his honeymoon trip. Sean, Davy, Connor and Bruno went looking for the clue, locket in the dead mafia's graves. Lily stayed behind, with Val, Tam, and Aaro, but when Tam had medical emergency, Lily was taken from the hospital by Hobart and Melanie, the operatives. Bruno and the guys found the locket and a tiny key in it, but did not know where the jewelry box was at that would take the key. So he had to go to New York's relatives places. Bruno gets taken from his granma's house. He found out that his mother, Magnalena had an overy removed from the autopsy report. At King's mansion, Lily and Bruno each faced King separately. Bruno found out that King was his biological father, and he used Magnaleda's eggs to create embryos to create super human operatives. Bruno had his training, too when he went missing when he was 7 years old. King tried to brainwash Bruno into believing Lily was one of his operatives and it was a setup from the beginning. Bruno had difficulty believing him or Lily. King sent Zoe after Sean and Kev, but Sean and Kev was waiting for the bad guys using Zoe as a bait. Sean and Kev followed the operatives, Julian and Hobart who came to pick up Zoe and finds King's mansion. By the time Sean and Kev arrived, the mansion was on fire Zoe set on and Lily and Bruno were trying to save two drugged babies from the 2nd floor. Bruno and Lily separates at the scene.6 weeks later, Lily came to the wedding of Kev and Edie's. She wanted to tell Bruno that she was pregnant. They talk and happily ever after. For Shannon McKenna's McCloud series, the hotness was weak and few. Action was fully packed. Still prefer older books with just physical action instead of brain controlling bad guys.
