Goddess Girls: Si Cerdas Athena (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
This book takes all the appeal factors of realistic fiction aimed at girls (new school, making friends, mean girls, etc.) and puts it in a setting that enables kids to learn a bit about ancient Greece. This would be great for kids who like Dear Dumb Diary or Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls and who might be interested in ancient Greece (but who aren't ready for, or aren't interested in, the intensity and action in the Percy Jackson series). Not a really great book. I had hoped for something really interesting and of course with a difference, given that this is a middle grader book. Instead got a story that felt as if the author was trying to ape J.K.Rowling and failing miserably.Athena is an above average girl on earth but she is summoned by her father Zeus to attend Mount Olympus Academy as she is a goddess. The story that follows is that of her first few days in the academy and how she makes friends, enemies and has fun. While the blurb sounded interesting and felt like fun, the book was a hotchpotch of events that take place at such a warp speed that you find the book is over even before you have started getting the story! While the story was funny in parts and did have a nice feeling about it, there were parts that distorted the original stories in Greek mythology, which made it irritating. The writing was mediocre and felt strained in parts, especially where the origins of Greek gods and goddesses were spun out in an unrealistic. Of course, if you are a middle grader, chances are that you might enjoy this. However, I did not and am not sure if I will be reading any more from this series.
