Gotham Central Deluxe Edition, Book 4: Corrigan (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
I was as bitterly disappointed with this last volume of Gotham Central as I was in love with the first three. I felt like everything I liked about those solid, gritty police procedurals with a hint of Batman was lost in this book. One story is told from the perspective of some corrupt police. Ugh! The story about the dead Robins was the best of the volume for me, but the overall story arc/ ending really underwhelmed me. Another story is a bizarre apocalyptic mystical superhero story...no, the police don't suddenly sprout superpowers, but the tone is still markedly different from the rest of the series. Less police procedural than anything. And the final story...yes, I suppose it's a police procedural, but it's more like watching some super gritty and depressing police movie starring Ray Liotta than watching Law and Order: Gotham. It is dark, dark, dark, with absolutely no reward for the reader who has come this far in the series. The authors and artists involved in this should be ashamed. What a lousy way to end the stories. I almost threw the book across the room after reading the last page--even what little bitter consolation could have been offered was not. Instead, it might as well have been fade to black. Worse than a waste of my time, and most DEFINITELY not worth the wait I had for it. I can't believe its over. I know it had to end, and I prefer things that do end rather than going on until they become irrelevant or I become bored with them. That being said the childlike fan of things I love just wanted this series to never end. Its a perfect synergy of two things I love: Batman and Police procedurals. These two elements, seemingly disparate, combine into a perfect crystalline structure of storytelling chemistry.Read this, and get ready to be bummed at the end. You will be treated to the best look into just how corrupt the GCPD as a whole is and how very different a beast the Major Crimes Unit is from most of your rank and file GCPD. This being Gotham, things will not end on the happiest note either.

AMAZING. This is just such visceral, true writing of these characters. It is to weep.

The strongest volume of the Gotham Central series. Gritty realism and gripping drama.
