Grimm Tales For Young And Old (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
The Grimm's fairy tales were my constant companions growing up. I owned a foxed copy of the complete unabridged fairy tales and they accompanied me on every road trip, plane ride, and family camping vacation throughout my adolescent years. Donkeyskin and Rose Red were two of my favorite tales (I still don't understand how Rose Red hasn't been made into a movie, I mean, she falls in love with a bear. Who's really an enchanted prince, of course) the first of which is included in this collection of retold tales by Phillip Pullman. I found Pullman's notes at the end of each story to be enlightening and entertaining and I think he does an excellent job of presenting the stories to a modern audience. "Grimm Tales: For Young and Old" is a retelling of 53 fairy tales from the Grimm brothers including popular ones that we know of such as Cinderella, Snow White and Red Riding Hood. You would think that it's just a compilation of all the fairy tales but Philip Pullman did make changes to these stories but not one you would instantly recognize if you are not exactly familiar with stories like Gambling Hans or The Girl with no Hands. He added little things that would make the stories make sense than they were in the original versions. One of the things I do like about the book is that he added a note at the end of every story, explaining the history and his thoughts about each and every one of them. If he made any changes, he would explain why he had done so and all of it are within reasons. Personally, I feel like this book should be a must-read for English classes in schools. Kids grew up loving Disney movies about Cinderella, etc. But not many know where these movies were inspired from and what were the original versions. This book would be a good introduction for young children. It's a good book for anyone to read, both young and old. Truly recommended if you love the Grimm brothers and/or their stories.

I loved re-reading these fairy tales that I grew up on. As an adult, I loved the "about"s after.

Fun. Not for the very young, but probably a good gift for the 12-13+ years.
