Have You Heard The Nesting Bird? (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I love this book! Sweet text all about the different sounds birds make, plus amazing watercolor illustrations that feel like part collage and part paper art. Very unique and interesting look. Not only will this story appeal to littles, preschool/kindergartners, but there's a really fun interview at the back of the book (between the author and the bird) with added information about nesting birds, which increases the age range a bit. Very fun and informative.Overall, worth the investment. Yes! Have You Heard the Nesting Bird, by Rita Gray and Kenard Pak, is a fantastic picture book that doubles as a children's first bird guide. Each bird (there are twelve total) is beautifully depicted in collage-style watercolor and digital media illustrations by Pak, and accompanied by a fairly accurate description of the bird call that it makes. Along the way, readers will be excited to discover what that nesting bird is so quietly doing up in the tree! The end of the book contains a very well done facts section that takes the form of a Q&A with the nesting bird. As someone who has devoted much time to learning about and identifying birds in the great outdoors, I feel confident in recommending this book, both for its visual beauty and it's accuracy. I think that children will enjoy the short story line that builds in anticipation and leads up to the hatching baby birds, and they will simultaneously be learning how to identify a few common birds that they may find in their backyards!
