Not a favorite by this author. It couldn't catch or keep my interest. It was my first Krewe Hunters book, and I didn't like it. The beginning dragged on forever with civil war world building. Don't get me wrong, I love the author's ties to history in her books. However, here she took a wrong turn. Next, I couldn't identify with, or like, either of the protagonists, Ashley or Jake. They were forgettable. So much so, that if you read one of the book reviews here, you'll find someone calls her Angela instead of Ashley. Now, that says a lot about the book and its characters. Lastly, confession time. After reading about 25% of the book, I skipped to the last chapter. I'm so glad I did! Couldn't believe the ending...especially if you've suffered through all of the civil war world building. I'm happy I didn't waste any more reading hours on this book. Another reviewer summed up this review really well:"Heart of Evil is the second book in the Krewe of Hunters series and it is quite different to the first one. Heart of Evil contains the same characters but this time it focuses on Jake. While, I think that you don’t have to read the first one in order to understand this one I would definitely recommend reading the first book, Phantom Evil before this one; especially if you want to know more about the characters backgrounds and things like that."However, the other reviewer thought that these changes made the novel so much better. Umm, no. This novel draaaggs. The romance between the two characters is really forced. The plot was pretty much non-existent. There was a murder that they were trying to solve, but the paranormal part was really lacking.
