Hell's Kitchen (2001) - Plot & Excerpts

There is something about a mystery novel that can be either entertaining or dreary. Ultimately you want the mystery and suspense; but not too much. If the mystery is too simple, then *yawn*. If it is too complicated then you start to think it is all too hard or that the author had finished the mystery and realised they had another 200 pages to fill. This is my first outing with Jeffery Deaver and I can see why he is so highly regarded with his mystery writing. He treads that fine line between too much and too little with a cool hand. There was much more to this story of catching a fire-bug for hire, with the climax really pulling me in.Part of the balance came from Jeff's use of Hell's Kitchen as the setting and the local residents as layers of story. For the most part the exposition felt necessary and served the larger mystery. The version I listened to was read by Paul Birchard who did as many accents as an American can in his reading.

What do You think about Hell's Kitchen (2001)?

8.0/10The plot of the novel is great. However, in my opinion there is too much writing. Deaver gives unnecessary background information, that has no apparent function in the novel. This bothered me quite a bit, because it made the novel a bit boring. It was a bit tedious at some points. Apart from this fact, the novel was very realistic and it contained heartfelt emotions. “I don’t know. I can find out.” The way Bailey emphasised the last sentence explained a little bit more about how gears got gummed up. {…} “that’s how it works in Hell’s Kitchen. Everybody’s a sellout. Maybe even me.” The smile faded. “Or maybe I just have a high price. That’s ethics around here - when it takes a lot to buy you.” - Louis Bailey, p.46

A good book. Actually, I thought this book would be related to the drama Hell's Kitchen. It does not related to that at all.John Pellam made a documentary film about the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. Hell's kitchen is actually a small town whereas poor and black people living there. This story actually initiate when there was a fire happens and someone important (he interview her for his films)to Pellam was being blamed for it.It gets interesting consequently and I would truly say that the ending was the most shocking part of the story. I am not a fan of Jeffery Deaver but I trust there will be more interesting stories beside this book.
