Herr Eichhorn Und Der Erste Schnee (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
I am entranced by this book. I want to look at it again and again and again. And so do my children. We LOVE this book. I'm hoping to buy it sometime soon, but for now--we're grateful that our library collects books of this caliber!Squirrel and Hedgehog are waiting for the first snowflake to fall because then it will be winter. Soon Bear joins them. The problem? None of them have ever seen snow before and they're not exactly sure what they're waiting for. After some misguided attempts to find the first snowflake, they are finally rewarded. What makes this book stand out is not its simple storyline (although I always appreciate picture books who manage to convey a lot with a simple line of text). No, this book's beauty lies in the illustrations. They are wonderful. I love the capture of movement, the equal capture of silence, the way the snow softens the image.... The illustrations in this book are, get this: Life. Changing. Really, they're amazing and made me giggle so loudly that I am pretty sure the woman across from me was giving me the evil eye. All is well, though. I did not give her one back because I assumed she was not familiar with the splendor that comes alongside reading this spectacular title. If you're looking for a quickly accessed smile that will last you all day, definitely pick up a copy of Waiting for Winter!
