Waiting For Winter (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Squirrel waits with the anticipation a young child feels for his first snow. The beautiful pencil drawings are full of detail, and are purposefully given a very scrawled out appearance to depict the type of animal a squirrel is, in other words an animal that scurries around. This is most apparent when squirrel does his exercise, and dashes around a tree. The illustrations for all the animals to follow also have slight stylistic differences; Porcupine's is sharper, Bear's is rougher, etc. All of these hibernating creatures use various methods to attempt to stay awake. Some of which put them in very silly poses. As they do not know what snow is they find various objects that fit its description, but once it really comes, they have a lot of fun together. This story is only made possible by the illustrations it has, for they provide all of its character and charm. I LOVE this picture book. It’s about a squirrel, a hedgehog, and a bear waiting for winter. A common picture book storyline, perhaps, but not at all tired in this book. The text is cute and clever but the drawings steal the show. The scruffy little faces on his characters brim with emotion. Meschenmoser’s funny text and lively sketches are unique and captivating and definitely worth searching for.
