Another great Hilda story from Luke Pearson. This time Hilda and her mum are dealing with the dangers of city life. Appropriately – this being Hilda's third outing for Flying Eye Books – the stakes feel higher here. Hilda's 'friends' are unpredictable, the city is an unknown quantity and nature itself behaves differently in the concrete jungle. But perhaps most memorable is the appearance of another great friend for Hilda – a raven that has forgotten how to fly and begrudgingly walks the streets with Hilda. These books are too gorgeous and too interesting for words. The story was cute but I find trying to read the cartoon style books with the balloons above the characters head somewhat tedious. Trying to make sure the kids are following along with every small square when I'm trying to read to 3 small children doesn't make it very easy, and so these types don't usually go over well with us. My 5 yr old sometimes enjoys them and reads them on his own, but there wasn't enough of a lure to keep reading for him after the first few pages. Might be better for older readers.
Really lovely illustrations and a very sweet story.
