He was chattering at Miss Davenport and trying to look everywhere at once, including over the side of the boat. A breeze ruffled the ribbons on Anne’s bonnet. It was difficult to believe she’d never been out on the water before. He’d like to take her— No. He wasn’t going to take Anne anywhere. Once they left this house party, he’d not see her again. If Eleanor invited him to visit her new home, he’d decline until he heard Miss Davenport had married.
