Khasakkinte Itihasam | ഖസാക്കിന്റെ ഇതിഹാസം (1969) - Plot & Excerpts

'Njangalku vazhi kanichu taruka, avar paranju. Avarude kannukal kalanjitu tirichuvaran ayaalavarodu paranju..' Even though this is the story of common men in day-to-day life,I'll call this a fable because all the characters seemed to be talking in multidimensions. It was a bit difficult reading it because of the language, but I got used to it as I turned pages. I tried to talk like Appukkili out of curiosity. I sympathized with Padma when she asks Ravi whether he is not coming back. I felt like vomiting when I saw Kuttadan Poosari tearing his own flesh. I was taken to a different world, the world called Khasak, and I found that I was searching for myself along with the others there. I found the truth in Ravi's words,"aarum koodu pattaarilla Madhavannaayare..."It was altogether a wonderful experience, reading this book. It is written in a style completely different from the ones I've read so far. It won't leave you unchanged. By the time you finish reading this book, you'll be thinking and you'll be thinking hard. You'll be touched, for sure. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I've been wanting to read books my malayali authors for a long time and finally got my chance to read one of the most famous books every written in Malayalam. One good thing about the book is that the English translation is by the author itself which to me is significant otherwise you always get the feeling you may be missing something.OV Vijayan tells a very simple story in a simple way in this short book; but it is in no way shallow. The characters and their experiences are deep and he also addresses issues that plague Indian society. The running away from guilt and the feeling of remorse is something most people can identify with and OV Vijayan brings it out subtly. The reason why Ravi is in Khasak or what he is running away from is not really addressed by is something that we infer from his dreams.I also like the author's note at the end of the book which almost suggests that this book is not entirely fictional. Overall a good book to read!
